Of all the days of this world, the most excellent are the Blessed Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah. Allah has preferred the Ten Days Dhul-Hijjah over All the other Days of the year.

"By the dawn, By the ten nights And by the even and the odd" surah al-Fajr 89:1-2

The virtue of these ten days is confirmed in the Qu'ran that Allah swears an oath by them, and swearing an oath by something is suggestive of its importance and great benefit. Allah says: "By the dawn; by the Ten nights…" Surah Fajr 89:1-2 in the opening above verse of Qu'ran.

Ibn 'Abbas says about the Ayah, "Remember Allah during the well known days," that it refers to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

Dhul-Hijjah (the Month of Hajj) is the 12th month of the Islamic lunar year. It is during this month that the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj, takes place. The actual pilgrimage rites take place on the 8th to 12th days of the month.

According to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, the first ten days of this month are a special time for devotion. During these days, preparations are underway for those who are undertaking the pilgrimage, and most of the actual pilgrimage rites occur. In particular, the 9th day of the month marks the Day of Arafat, and the 10th day of the month marks the Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice). Even for those who are not travelling for the pilgrimage, this is a special time to remember Allah and spend extra time in devotion and good deeds.

There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the hellfire than on the day of Arafah; on this day sins are forgiven, Allah becomes closer to his slaves, His Angels boast of the people standing on the plain of Arafah, as they stand, humbly, sacrificing, remembering Allah and seeking His forgiveness. This is the day of the Great Pilgrimage; a day of praise for Allah, a day of remembrance and repentance.

So fast this day of Arafah and make for yourselves a portion of Qu'ran to read or remembrance to make and seek His forgiveness, in the hope that He will accept it from you and shower you in His mercy, in both this life and the next. And who from us is not in need of this great bounty?

It was during the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijja that Allah accepted the repentance of Adam, when He relented toward him and restored him to His grace at Arafa.

It was during those Ten Days that Abraham the Bosom Friend-Ibrahim al-Khalil (peace be upon him) obtained the bosom friendship bestowed upon him by Allah, having sacrificed his wealth for the sake of the guests, himself for the sake of the fires, his son for the sake of the Criterion-Furqan, and his heart for the sake of the All-Merciful.

It was during those Ten Days that Abraham Ibrahim (peace be upon him) constructed the noble Ka'ba.
It was during those Ten Days that Allah honoured Moses peace be upon him) with intimate conversation.

It was during those Ten Days that forgiveness descended upon David-Dawud (peace be upon him).

It is recommended that we make takbir i.e. to say Allah Akbar (Allah is the Greatest), tahlil, la ilah illa Allah (there is no deity except Allah) and tahmid to praise Allah by saying al-hamdullilah hamdan kathiran.

Therefore, we find in the hadith of ibn Umar, “Make tahlil, takbir and tahmid much on these days.” Al-Imam al-Bukhari said that Ibn Umar and Abu Hurayrah would go into the market in the first ten days [of Dhul Hijjah] and make takbir and the people would follow them.

He also said that Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, would be in his tent in Mina and make takbir until the people in the mosque heard him and would follow him making takbir. Indeed the people in the markets of Mina also followed them until the whole of Mina would shake with takbir. They would also make takbir after their prayers, whilst riding, whilst walking and whilst in their gatherings and it is appropriate that we also revive this practice.
Included among the Ten Days;

8 th of Dhul-Hijjah Day of Tarwiyya ;
9 th of Dhul-Hijjah Day of ‘Arafa Yawm -‘Arafa – day on which Allah perfected His Religion
10 th of Dhul-Hijjah Day of sacrifice- Qurbani [Yawm an-Nahr ] day of 'Eid al-Adha. the greatest day of the entire year and the greatest day of Hajj, which combines acts of worship in a way unlike any other day.

‘The chieftain-sayyid of the months is the month of Ramadan, and the mightiest of them in sanctity -hurma is Dhul-Hijjah'. Tradition ......‘Of all the days of this world, the most excellent are the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah.' Tradition

When someone asked: "Is there nothing to match them, not event in fighting for the cause of Allah he replied: There is nothing to match them, not even in fighting for the cause of Allah, unless it be a man who rubs his face in the dust.

Of all the days, there are none in which Allah (Exalted is He) more dearly loves to have worshipful service performed for His sake, other than the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah.
If someone devotes the Ten Days to fasting, Allah will record a whole year of fasting in his credit column, for each and every one of those days.

For each and every day you devote to fasting , you will be credited with the freeing of a hundred slaves , with a hundred she-camels for you to guide in caravan, and with a hundred mares for you to ride in fighting for the cause of Allah.

Then, when it comes to the Day of Tarwiyya -8 th of Dhul-Hijjah , you will be credited with the freeing of a thousand slaves , with a thousand she-camels for you to guide in caravan, and with a thousand mares for you to ride in fighting for the cause of Allah.

Then, when it comes to the Day of ‘Arafa - 9 th of Dhul-Hijjah , you will be credited with the freeing of two thousand slaves , with two thousand she-camels for you to guide in caravan, and with two thousand mares for you to ride in fighting for the cause of Allah. Fasting on this day will forgive for the sins of two years, that is, You will also be credited with keeping the fast in the year before this one, and in the year to come after it .'

10th of Dhul-Hijjah is known by most as 'Eid al-Adha . It is incumbent for the Muslim ( who is not making Hajj) to make every effort to perform the `Eid Prayer wherever it is performed, and to be present for the Khutbah and benefit from it. He must know the wisdom behind the legislation of this `Eid. It is a day of thankfulness and performing deeds of righteousness. So, he must not make it a day of wildness, pride and vanity. He should not make it a season of disobedience and increase in the forbidden things like, uncontrolled amusement, intoxicants and the like - those things which could cause the cancellation of the good deeds done in these ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.

‘Of all the days on which righteous work is performed, nothing is dearer to Allah than a man who does righteous work during these days'. meaning Ten Days Dhul-Hijjah.

No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these Days , the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The Companions submitted: ‘O' Messenger of Allah, not even fighting (carrying on Jihad) in the cause of Allah? He (S.A.W) answered: yes not even Jihad in the cause of Allah except in the case of a person who goes on Jihad along with his life and his property and does not come back with either (i.e he is martyred in the Jihad) Tradition.

Allah has preferred the Ten Days Dhul-Hijjah over All the other Days of the year.

The scholars of Islam, in discussing the virtue and excellence of the these Days say it is because they combine the essential acts of worships in Islam including prayer, fasting, supererogatory acts, charity and pilgrimage, as these are not present in any other days.

For this reason they said that the first Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best days of the year, in the same way that the Last ten Nights of Ramadhan are the best Ten Nights of the year. With no exceptions, not even the last Ten Days of Ramadhan. But the Last Ten Nights of Ramadhan are better, because they include Laylat al-Qadr ("the Night of Power"), which is better than a thousand months. The key word here is Day not Night being mentioned to clear any confusion.!
Also, Fasting any of the 1st Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah is equivalent to fasting one year and to offer salatul tahajjud (late-night prayer) during one of its nights is like performing the late night prayer on the night of power-Laylatul Qadr.

The question here then is, after knowing the virtue and excellence of these days, “What is preferred for us to do in these days and how can we benefit from them?” In fact the ways to do good are many and the gates to righteous action are wide and spacious and indeed, the bounty of Allah is even greater. As Allah reminds us in the Quran, “What ever you perform from good then you will find it with Allah and this is better for you and greater in reward.” (73:20)

There were four practices that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) never failed to observe, namely:
1. Fasting during the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah;
2. Fasting on the Day of 'Ashura';
3. Fasting on at least three days in every month;
4. Two cycles of voluntary ritual prayer (2 Nafil rak'ats) before the prescribed prayer of early morning.

Praise be to Allah who has made some months and days/nights better than others, were rewards are multiplied many times over, as a mercy towards His slaves. Encouraging them to do more righteous deeds and makes them more eager to worship Him and renew his efforts to gain a greater share of reward.

Such an opportunity to correct ones faults and make up for any shortcomings or anything that one might have missed cannot be ignored. NO for this is the occasion for EXTRA worship through which the slaves may draws closer to Allah and gains blessing of His favours and mercy.

Remmber 'There is no day in which Allah liberates more servants from the hellfire than the Day of Arafa' the question will you be one of those slaves? who will be doing Ibaadah at that time for that Mercy.
“Those who would hasten to do good and supplicated to Us out of hope and fear and were humble.” (21:90)

Ibadah-Worship to do on the blessed 1st Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah Fasting - Salat and Dhikr for these Blessed Ten Days

“There are no days more loved to Allah for you to worship Him therein than the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Deeds are multiplied in these days. It is during these days that deeds are superior and more beloved, then deeds done at other times. These deeds are superior even to jihaad .
Increase your acts of worship, your remembrance, and your supplication throughout this great day. This is a day in which salvation from the hellfire is within your reach. The Prophet (saw) said, "There is no day in which Allah liberates more servants from the hellfire than the Day of Arafah-9th of Dhul-Hijjah

Note:-These are the days of Hajj and Umrah, but what do the people who haven't gone ?

1st as much Dhikr of :-Takbir,Tahmid,Tahleel and Tasbih in the 1st Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah Dhike below:-

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Lã ilãha illallãhu wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Walil lahil hamd.

"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity besides Allah and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and all praises are for Allah only."

It is Sunnah to say Takbir ("Allahu akbar"), Tahmid ("Al-hamdu Lillaah"), Tahleel ("La ilaha ill-Allah") and Tasbih ("Subhaan Allah") during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, and to say it loudly in the mosque, the home, the street and every place where it is permitted to remember Allah and mention His name out loud, as an act of worship and as a proclamation of the greatness of Allah, may He be exalted. Men should recite these phrases out loud, and women should recite them quietly.
Recite them at all times of night and day until the time of the Eid Prayer., and after the (five) obligatory prayers that are performed in congregation. This begins from Dawn (Fajr) on the Day of Arafah (the 9th of Zul-Hijjah) for those not performing Haj, and from Noon (Zhur) on the Day of Sacrifice (10th of Zul-Hijjah) for those performing Haj (pilgrims); and it continues until Asr prayer on the last day of the days of Tashreeq (Days of Tashreeq 11,12, 13th of Dhul-Hijjah).

Note: Takbir at this time is an aspect of the Sunnah that has been forgotten, especially during the early part of this period, so much so that one hardly ever hears Takbir, except from a few people. This Takbir should be pronounced loudly, in order to revive the Sunnah and as a reminder to the negligent.
Ibn `Abaas commented on the verse …and to mention Allah's name plentifully on Known days [22:28] by saying: …these known days are the ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

Extra Dua
The best supplication is the one on the day of Arafah -9th of Dhul-Hijjah Day of ‘Arafa , and the best thing which I and the prophets before me have said is, ‘There is no god but Allah alone who has no partner; to Him belongs the dominion, to Him praise is due, and He is Omnipotent (able to do all things)

2.Fasting:-Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will place between him and the Hellfire a trench equal to the distance between the sky and the earth. Allah says: ‘All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except for fasting, which is for Me and I am the One Who will reward him for it.

Fasting any of the 1st ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah each day is equivalent to fasting one year and to offer Salatul Tahajjud (late-night prayer ) during one of its nights is like performing the late night prayer on the night of power Layatul Qadr)"

For each and every day you devote to fasting, you will be credited with the freeing of a hundred slaves , with a hundred she-camels for you to guide in caravan, and with a hundred mares for you to ride in fighting for the cause of Allah.

When comes to the Day of Tarwiyya -8 th of Dhul-Hijjah, and you Fast then you will be credited with the freeing of a thousand slaves , with a thousand she-camels for you to guide in caravan, and with a thousand mares for you to ride in fighting for the cause of Allah.
Then, when it comes to the Day of ‘Arafa - 9 th of Dhul-Hijjah, and you Fast then you will be credited with the freeing of two thousand slaves , with two thousand she-camels for you to guide in caravan, and with two thousand mares for you to ride in fighting for the cause of Allah. Fasting on this day will forgive for the sins of two years, that is, You will also be credited with keeping the fast in the year before this one, and in the year to come after it .'

Fasting the day of `Arafah-9th Dhul-Hijjah Forgives (ONLY) all Minor sins of two years: a past one and a coming one. And fasting the day of `Ashura' Forgives the sins of the past year . Tradition

Fasting is Sunnah to fast on the ninth day of Dhu'l-Hijjah.

3rd Qiyam al-Layl-Night Vigil:-…Salatul Tahajjud ( late-night prayer ) during one of its nights (in the 1 st ten days of of Dhul-Hijjah) is like performing the late night prayer on the night of power-Layatul Qadr"

If someone enlivens any night of the Ten Nights of Dhul-Hijjah by keeping night vigil, it will be as if he had performed the same worshipful service-ibadah, for sake of Allah, as someone who not only performs the Pilgrimage-Hajj, but also performs the Visitation-‘Umra throughout the entire year .
If someone devotes one day to fasting, during 1st Ten Days Dhul-Hijjah , it will be as if he had devoted the whole of the year to the worshipful service of Allah (Exalted is He) and keeping Qiyamal-Layl-Night vigil on one of those nights is like Qiyamal-Layl keeping Night vigil for one whole year .

Ritual prayer Salat of 4 rak'at that is traditionally recommended during the 1st Ten Days Dhul-Hijjah

Doing plenty of voluntary (nafl) righteous deeds of worship like Prayer, Charity, reading the Qur'an, Commanding what is Good and Forbidding what is Evil, and other such deeds.
4th Qurbani- The slaughtering of a sacrificial animal is also legislated for the Day of Sacrifice (10th) and the Days of Tashreeq (11th, 12th and 13th). This is the Sunnah of our father Ibrahim - when Allah, the Most High, redeemed Ibrahim's son by the great sacrifice (of an animal in his place).

The number hairs is the numbers of Sins that will be forgiven if a person Sacrifice animal and feeds the poor with the meat.

5th At-Tawbah (repentance) and abstaining from disobedience and all types of sins, since forgiveness and mercy are the results of deeds. Disobedience is the cause of being far away (from Allah, the Most High) and repulsion, while obedience is the cause of being near (to Allah, Most High) and His love.
Sincere repentance. One of the most important things to do during these ten days is to repent sincerely to Allah and to give up all kinds of disobedience and sin. Repentance means coming back to Allah and foregoing all the deeds, open and secret, that He dislikes, out of regret for what has passed, giving it up immediately and being determined never to return to it, but to adhere firmly to the Truth by doing what Allah loves.

If a Muslim commits a sin, he must hasten to repent at once, without delay, firstly because he does not know when he will die, and secondly because one evil deed leads to another.

Repentance at special times is very important because in most cases people's thoughts turn towards worship at these times, and they are keen to do good, which leads to them recognizing their sins and feeling regret for the past. Repentance is obligatory at all times, but when the Muslim combines sincere repentance with good deeds during the days of most virtue, this is a sign of success, insha'Allah.

Sa it says in the Qu'ran "But as for him who repented, believed and did righteous deeds, then he will be among those who are successful." [al-Qasas 28:67]

Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah

Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah

Allah (SWT) takes an Oath by the Ten Nights of Dhul-Hijjah:

(وَٱلۡفَجۡرِ (١) وَلَيَالٍ عَشۡرٍ۬ (٢
I swear by the dawn, [89:1]

and by the Ten Nights, [89:2]

Some commentators, like Mujahid and 'Ikramah, refer this to the dawn of 'the Day of Sacrifice' on the tenth of Dhul Hijjah. A narration from Sayyidna Ibn 'Abbas (RA) concurs with this view. (Summarised from Tasfeer Maariful Qur’aan & Tafseer Ibn Katheer)

According Sayyidna Ibn 'Abbas , Qatadah, Mujahid, Suddi, Dahhak, Kalbi and other leading commentators, the 'ten nights' refers to the [first] ten nights of Dhul Hijjah. (Summarised from Tasfeer Maariful Qur’aan & Tafseer Ibn Katheer)

Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) declares the good deeds of 10 days to be most Superior:

Narrated Ibn Abbas (RA): The Prophet said, "No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijja)." Then some companions of the Prophet said, "Not even Jihad?" He replied, "Not even Jihad, except that of a man who does it by putting himself and his property in danger (for Allah's sake) and does not return with any of those things." (Reported by Tirmidhi)

Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) used to fast all 9 days including Arafah:

One of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah’s Messenger used to fast the [first] nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, the day of `Ashurah, and three days of each month." (Reported by Abu Dawud).

Fasting on Arafah day is an expiation for sins committed the year before and the year after:

Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fasting on the day of `Arafah is an expiation (of sins) for two years, the year preceding it and the year following it. (Reported by Ibn Majah)

Sacrificing an animal is an established Sunnah on Eid day:

Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib (RA) that I heard the Prophet (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) say when he gave a sermon (on the day of Idal-Adha), "The first thing we will do on this day of ours, is to offer the ('Id) prayer and then return to slaughter the sacrifice. Whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (tradition). (Reported by Bukhari)

Eating, drinking, enjoying and reciting Ayamul-Tashreeq: 11th, 12th & 13th of Dhul-Hijjah:

[2:203] Recite the name of Allah during the given number of days. Then whoever is early in leaving after two days, there is no sin on him, and whoever leaves later, there is no sin on him, if he is God-fearing. Fear Allah and be sure that you are going to be gathered before Him.

Ibn Abbas (RA) said, “The given number of days are the Ayamul-Tashreeq And the known days are the ten. Ikramah (RA) said, “Remember Allah (SWT) in the given number of days i.e. recite the Takbeer (Allahu Akbarm Allahu Akbar) in Ayamul-Tashreeq after the Fardh (obligatory) Prayers). Uqbah Ibn Amir (RA) narrates that Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) said that the day of Arafah, the day of Sacrifice and the Ayanul-Tashreeq are our days (for people of Islam) and eat and drink in these days. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer)

Umar Ibn Khattab (RA), Ali Ibn Abi Talib (RA) & Ibn Abbas (RA) said, “Recite the Takbeer from the Fajar of the day of Arafah until the Asar of the last day of Ayamul-Tashreeq (13th of Dhul-Hijjah). (Tafseer of Imam Qurtubi)

And in Summary it is narrated from Imam Malik (RA) [about the Takbeer] Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La Ilaha Illallah, Wallahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wallilahil Hamd

Note:  Takbeer Tashreeq is the recitation of Allahu akbar, La ilaha illa hu Wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar wa lillahil hamd after every fardh salaah commencing from the Fajr of the 9th of Dhul Hijah until after Asr of the 13th of Dhul Hijjah. (Shami vol. 1 pg. 406)

When Ibrahim (AS) began moving the knife on his beloved son, Ismaeel (AS), the angels sent by Allah with a ram exclaimed. Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar (Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest). Ibrahim (AS) heard the voice of the angels and replied, La illah illa Allahu Wallahu akbar (There is no god besides Allah, and Allah is the greatest).

His son Ismaeel (AS) heard this conversation and understood that Allah had relieved him from this great rial, thus he replied, Allahu Akbar Walillahil hamd (Allah is the greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise)(Ibid).

Mustahab (Prefferable) NOT to cut any hair or trim any nails if one is preparing to make a sacrifice for Eid:

Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "When anyone of you intends to sacrifice the animal and enter in the month of Dhul-Hijjah, he should not get his hair cut or nails pared till he has offered his sacrifice.'' (Reported by Muslim)

Note: Ulama have stated that this includes moustache and hair of the private parts etc. However, if the hair under the arms and in the pubic region is very long (which renders the Salaat Makrooh i.e. more than forty days), then it will become compulsory to remove such hair. However, if a person forgets to clip the nails before the 1st of Dhul Hijjah and the nails have grown so long that they may cause injury, then he may clip them.

O Allah! Certainly I seek protection with You from, that I associate partner with You anything and I know it. And I seek forgiveness from You for that I do not know it. I repended from it and I made myself free from disbelief and polytheism and the falsehood and the back-biting and the innovation and the tell-tales and the bad deeds and the blame and the disobedience, all of them. And I submit and I say (there is) none worthy of worship except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of ALLAH.
